General:
1. What is Hospice?
Hospice is a registered non-profit organization, providing palliative care to those in the community who are diagnosed with a terminal illness. Hospice also provides bereavement support after a loss has occurred. Our trained volunteers provide hours of care and compassion at no expense to the client. Hospice is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

2. How is it funded?

Hospice is funded by the LHIN (Local Health Intragration Network).  In 2007, Hospice received a 2 year grant from the Trillium Foundation to develop and implement our Child and Youth Bereavement Support Groups.

3. How can I help?
There are several ways people in the community can help our organization. You may take our Palliative Care Course to become a volunteer. You may help out by supporting our fundraising events. Finally you can help by making a donation to Hospice L&A. All donations receive an income tax receipt. To find out more information please contact the office at 354-0833.

Volunteers:
1. Who are the volunteers?
Hospice volunteers are men and women of all ages and backgrounds. They are both professionals and non-professionals. Some are retired from the work force and looking to be helpful in the community. Others are working part time and feel they would like to be a part of Hospice. Hospice offers a variety of volunteer opportunities; from fundraising to client care, to meet the needs of both Hospice and the volunteer.

2. How are they chosen?
Once a person expresses an interest in Hospice they may meet with the Executive Director to discuss volunteer opportunities that meet the needs of both the organization and the volunteer. If interested in volunteering for client care, you will need to complete a 30 hour training program. Participants examine closely their own attitudes and feelings concerning things such as disease, illness and death. Included are communications training; and the physical and emotional stresses experienced by clients and their families.

3. What can the volunteers do?
Our volunteers help with client care fundraising, ticket selling and/or office help.

Our client care volunteers perform services that you might ask a neighbour or relative to help with. For instance, the volunteer may:
   • Stay with the client while a spouse or family members rests or runs errands
   • Do light housework
   • Take client for walks
   • Help with shopping or pick up prescriptions
   • Help prepare suitable meals
   • Transport a client to medical appointments
   • Visit with the client and family members offering support
   • Help in keeping client comfortable
   • Sometimes just sit and listen

Clients:
1. How and when are referrals made?
Referrals to Hospice L&A can be made by anyone, including family members, friends, health care professionals, or the client themselves. The referral can be made after a terminal or life-threatening diagnosis has been determined. Referrals are made by calling the office at 354-0833.

2. What is the cost?
There is no cost to any of the services Hospice L&A provides to the community.

3. How is a volunteer chosen for a client?
Clients are carefully matched with the right volunteer to ensure compatibility. The volunteer visits are then arranged by the Hospice staff, who does the initial assessment along with the client or clients’ family. Some families and volunteers prefer to have a regular scheduled time, for instance, every Tuesday afternoon. Others prefer to be more flexible and call the volunteer to work out the most convenient time as the need arises.
